Ceuta Day

Ceuta Day is a regional holiday in the autonomous city of Ceuta in Spain, and it is observed on September 2 each year.

Ceuta Day commemorates the date when Pedro de Meneses became the first Governor of Ceuta by King John I of Portugal in 1415.

Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of Africa and it is bordered by Morocco, In history, the city was conquered by various forces. In August 1415, King John I of Portugal and his troops traveled on 200 Portuguese ships and attacked Ceuta. Surprisingly easy, they conquered the city overnight.

Following the Conquest of Ceuta, King John I of Portugal appointed Pedro de Meneses as the first Governor of Ceuta. Many residents of Spanish origin started to settle here, and in January 1668, King Afonso VI of Portugal formally ceded Ceuta to King Carlos II of Spain.

On March 13, 1995, the Statute of Autonomy was granted to both Ceuta and Melilla.
