Cartagena Independence Day celebrates the declaration of the independence of Cartagena from Spain in 1811, which was an important step towards the independence of Colombia. Cartagena, a city and major port on the northern coast of Colombia, was founded in 1533 by the Spanish commander, and it soon became an important port for export to Spain during the Spanish colonial period.
On November 11, 1811, Cartagena proclaimed independence during the Latin American wars of independence.
