Carnival (Grenada)

Carnival, also known as the Spicemas Carnival, is a public holiday in Grenada. The public holidays have two days: Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday, but the celebrations may last the whole month.

Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday are observed on the second Monday and Tuesday in August. The holiday was originally celebrated the night before Lent fasting, which lasts 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter excluding Sunday in the Christian churches.

However, Carnival is to celebrate the slavery abolishment in many Caribbean countries. As a result, many Caribbean countries observe the Carnival celebrations in early August to commemorate the anniversary when slavery was abolished on August 1, 1834.

Grenada is an island country in the Caribbean Sea, and it is known as the Island of Spice because of nutmeg and mace crops. As a result, the Carnival is named the Spicemas Carnival. The Carnival celebration is a combination of colourful paint, traditional music, dancing, and alcohol. Many tourists will also join the crowd of locals to celebrate the festival for fun.
