Boganda Day (Central African Republic)

Boganda Day is a public holiday in the Central African Republic, and it is observed on March 29 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Barthélemy Boganda died on March 29 in 1959.

Barthélemy Boganda was born on April 4, 1910 in Bobangui, Central African Republic. He was adopted by Catholic missionaries in his early years and became the first Roman Catholic priest native to the Central African Republic.

He was elected to the National Assembly of France in 1946 and founded the Movement for the Social Evolution of Black Africa (MESAN) in Bangui in 1949, quickly dominating local politics.

Following the dissolution of French Equatorial Africa in 1958, the Central African Republic became an autonomous member of the French Community. Barthélemy Boganda became the autonomous territory's first Prime Minister and intended to serve as the first President of the independent Central African Republic. On March 29, 1959, he died in a mysterious plane crash.
