Betico Croes was born on January 25, 1938 in Santa Cruz, Aruba. He was the leader of the political party of the People's Electoral Movement, and the proponent for the separation from the Netherlands Antilles. He was responsible for Aruba's independence referendum in 1997, in which 83% of voters favored independence.
Betico Croes also negotiated Aruba's independence to separate from the Netherlands Antilles as the first step in 1986 and to separate from the Netherlands as the second step in 1996. He was considered the father of the Country of Aruba.
Unfortunately, he was involved in a traffic accident on December 31, 1985, and lost consciousness until his death on November 26, 1986.
