Battle of San Jacinto (Nicaragua)

The Battle of San Jacinto is a public holiday in Nicaragua on September 14 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto in 1856.

Nicaragua is the largest country in the Central American isthmus. Christopher Columbus arrived in Nicaragua in 1502 on his fourth voyage. In 1524, the Spaniards established the first permanent settlements. Nicaragua gained its independence from Spain in 1821.

The Battle of San Jacinto was fought between the 160 Nicaraguan soldiers and 300 Nicaraguan filibusters on September 14, 1856. Filibusters are United States citizens engaged in an unauthorized military expedition in Nicaragua. The battle lasted four hours in the morning, and the Nicaraguan soldiers defeated the filibusters. During the battle, 27 filibusters and 28 Nicaraguan soldiers were killed.
