The Battle of Pichincha is a public holiday in Ecuador, and it is observed on May 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the battle of Pichincha in 1822, which led to the independence of Quito and many other provinces in Ecuador.
The Spanish took over what is now Ecuador from the Inca in 1533. After almost 300 years of Spanish rule, the people in Quito (the capital of Ecuador) called for independence from Spain on August 10, 1809. Although the independence only lasted a short time, it inspired the independence movement for the rest of Spanish America.
On October 9, 1820, Guayaquil became the first territory in Ecuador to gain its independence from Spain. On May 24, 1822, the Battle of Pichincha took place on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano near the city of Quito. As a result of the battle, the city of Quito and many other provinces declared independence from Spain.
