The revolutionaries considered the Bastille a symbol of the monarchy's abuse of power.
Revolutionary sentiment was rising in Paris by July 1789. On July 14, 1789, people stormed into the Bastille prison, gathered weapons, and freed prisoners. Bastille Day marked the start of the French Revolution.
