Balipratipada, also Balipadyami or Bali Puja, is the fourth day of Diwali and the Hindu festival of lights. The festival is observed on the 1st day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month Kartik, which is usually in October or November in the Gregorian calendar.
Balipratipada commemorates the annual return of Asura king Bali to earth for a day and the victory of Vamana over Mahabali and all asuras. According to Hindu mythology, Vamana is one of the incarnations of God Vishnu, and Mahabali was the king of the Asuras. After Mahabali was defeated by Vishnu, Mahabali asked for and was granted by Vishnu returning to earth once a year. On this day, he is remembered and worshipped.
