Asturias Day

Asturias Day is a public holiday in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain, and it is observed on September 8 each year.

Asturias Day marks the birth of Mary, mother of Jesus, which is an important day to people in Asturias. Some people attend church services in honor of the Virgin of Covadonga, which is a statue of the Virgin Mary, and it was believed to have miraculously aided the Christian victory in the Battle of Covadonga, a battle that took place near Covadonga in the Picos de Europa in 722. It is the Battle that people traditionally regarded as the foundational event of the Kingdom of Asturias.

Asturias Day was declared as a public holiday and celebrated on September 8 by the law on June 28, 1984 because this date is traditionally celebrated as the birth of Mary.
