Agricultural Reform Day (São Tomé and Príncipe)

Agricultural Reform Day is a public holiday in São Tomé and Príncipe observed on September 30 each year. The holiday commemorates the agricultural reforms when the plantations were nationalized in 1975.

São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in the Gulf of Guinea, and it consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands: São Tomé and Príncipe. The islands were not inhabited when the Portuguese arrived in the 15th century.

The Portuguese established the first settlement on the islands in 1493 and set up sugar plantations. São Tomé and Príncipe became the world's largest sugarcane fields in the 16th century, but the economy declined in the next centuries. The Portuguese companies introduced coffee and coca in the early 19th century.

However, the Portuguese landowners owned most of the cultivated plantations. After independence, on July 12, 1975, the plantations passed to state-owned agricultural enterprises. The holiday marks the nationalization of the plantations from the Portuguese-owned plantations.
