Abolition Day (Mayotte)

Abolition Day is a public holiday in Mayotte, observed on April 27 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of slavery being abolished in Mayotte in 1847.

Mayotte is one of the overseas departments of France, which is one of the 18 regions of France. Mayotte is also one of the four large islands of the Comoros archipelago. The Portuguese explorers first observed the island in 1503, but Portugal did not take action.

In 1841, France purchased Mayotte, becoming a French island and colony. Slavery in the Comoros archipelago began long before the 16 century and impacted the Comorian archipelago from an early age. In 1847, the French abolished slavery in Mayotte, 6 years after its occupation.
