Abolition Day (French Guiana)

Abolition Day is a public holiday in French Guiana, observed on June 10 each year. The holiday commemorates when slavery was abolished in French Guiana in 1848.

French Guiana is one of the overseas departments of France, and it is located on the northern Atlantic coast of South America. Native Americans originally inhabited the territory. The French attempted to establish settlements here in 1624 and managed to establish a settlement in 1643. However, the French were forced to abandon several times due to attacks from Indians and other European countries until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814.

The French imported Africans as enslaved laborers on large plantations and French Guiana was developed as a slave society. On April 27, 1848, the French government announced the abolition of slavery in its colonies and granted citizenship to the emancipated slaves. However, the news took over a month until June 10, 1848, to reach French Guiana, which is why French Guiana celebrates June 10 as Abolition Day.
