National Children's Day, also known as Aso Tamaliki in Tuvalu, is a public holiday in Tuvalu, and it is observed on the first Monday of every August each year. The holiday honors children, promoting awareness and improving children's welfare.
Tuvalu, previously known as the Ellice Islands, is an island country in the Pacific Ocean. People began to inhabit the islands about 3000 years ago. Tuvalu became a British protectorate in 1892 and then part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1916 to 1975. On October 1, 1978, Tuvalu gained its independence as a sovereign state within the Commonwealth realm.
Tuvalu is a small country with about 11,000 people, and 30% are children aged 15 or younger. Tuvalu began to pay a lot of attention to children's development and welfare. Education in Tuvalu is free and compulsory for children. Each island has a primary school, but there are only two secondary schools in Tuvalu: one in Vaitupu, and another in Funafuti. Besides education, all children under 18 are free of charge for medical care.
