President's Day is a public holiday in Equatorial Guinea, and it is observed on June 5 each year. The holiday celebrates the birthday of the second president of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang.
Teodoro Obiang was born in Acoacan on June 5, 1942. He attended the General Military Academy in Spain, and served in several positions, such as governor of Bioko and leader of the National Guard, after Macias Nguema, his uncle, became the first president.
Macias Nguema soon created a single-party state in 1970, replaced the constitution, and assumed the title of President for Life in 1973. Human rights abuses and totalitarianism characterized his regime, and many people were killed.
At the end of his regime, Macias had several family members killed, including Obiang's brother, which made the extended family fear for their lives.
On August 3, 1979, Teodoro Obiang led a successful military coup and overthrew the Macias regime. Macias was arrested and executed. Teodoro Obiang became the second president of Equatorial Guinea. Teodoro Obiang has served as the president since August 1979 and is the second-longest consecutively serving non-royal national leader in the world.
