Independence Day (Syria)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Syria, observed on April 17. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Syria's independence from France in 1946.

The Syrian Arab Republic is a country in Western Asia. In 1516, the Ottoman Empire invaded Syria. Syria was under the Ottoman rule for 400 years until it was defeated in World War I. In 1920, the Kingdom of Syria was established, but it only lasted briefly before the French troops occupied Syria.

Syria and France negotiated a treaty of independence in 1936, but the French later refused to ratify it. However, the French power over Syria was weakened in World War II. In 1946, France evacuated their troops due to pressure from the British and Syrian nationalists. Following the evacuation of the French troops, Syria gained its independence on April 17, 1946.
