Kamuzu Day (Malawi)

Kamuzu Day is a public holiday in Malawi, observed on May 14 yearly. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the Prime Minister and later the President of Malawi, from 1964 to 1994. His real birthday is unknown because there was no birth document then, but Banda gave himself the office birthday on May 14, 1906.

In 1925, Hastings Banda went to the United States and received a Bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1931 and a medical degree at the Meharry Medical College in Tennessee in 1937. He needed a second medical degree to practice medicine in the British Empire, so he attended the University of Edinburgh and worked as a doctor from 1941 to 1945.

Hastings Banda returned to Nyasaland in 1958 and became the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) leader, which was changed to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). He was arrested and imprisoned in 1959 and released in 1960. In 1961, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) won the election, and Hastings Banda became the Prime Minister in 1963. On July 6, 1964, Nyasaland declared independence from the British Empire as the Republic of Malawi and renamed itself Malawi. Hastings Banda served as the Prime Minister and then the first president from 1964 to 1994.
