Statehood Day is a public holiday in Slovenia on June 25 each year. The holiday commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. On June 25, the independence act was passed, and independence was declared the next day.
Yugoslavia was a country for most of the 20th century, and it came into existence in 1918 after World War I. It broke up five republics in the early 1990s: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Yugoslavia, and Slovenia.
Yugoslavia was renamed Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. However, Montenegro became independent in 2006. The Republic of Kosovo also declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
