1956 Revolution Memorial Day

1956 Revolution Memorial Day, also known as the Hungarian Uprising, is a public holiday in Hungary, and it is observed on October 23 each year. The holiday commemorates the start of the nationwide revolution against the Soviet-imposed policies on October 23, 1956.

Hungary became a satellite state of the Soviet Union after World War II and suffered from many challenges including poverty, religious issues, a one-party state, etc. In October 1956, thousands of students went to the streets demanding democracy, and they were fired on by police. Several students died, and disorder erupted throughout the capital.

People organized themselves and battled with the Soviet troops. On November 4, 1956, the Soviet force invaded Budapest and other parts of the country, which caused 2,500 Hungarians to die and 200,000 Hungarians to flee as refugees.
