Zanzibar Revolution Day

Zanzibar Revolution Day is a public holiday in Tanzania on January 12 each year.

Zanzibar Revolution Day marks the revolution that overthrew the sultan who ruled Zanzibar. Zanzibar became a British protectorate in 1890. In 1963, the United Kingdom terminated the protectorate and turned Zanzibar into an independent country under the Sultan within the Commonwealth.

On January 12, 1964, the revolution led by John Okello overthrew the sultan, who fled into exile. The Sultanate was replaced with the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba, which was merged with mainland Tanganyika with the new name of the United Republic of Tanzania.

During the revolution, over 20,000 people were killed and refugees, especially Arabs and Indians.
