Vasant Panchami, also Basant Panchami, is a restricted holiday in India. Vasant in Hindi means "Spring" and Panchami means "fifth", so Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of Magha month in the Hindu calendar, which is about late January or February in the Gregorian calendar.
Vasant Panchami is a festival that marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, the season when yellow mustard flowers are in bloom. People celebrate the day by wearing yellow, eating sweet dishes and displaying yellow flowers in homes.
Vasant Panchami is also celebrated as Saraswati Puja dedicated to Goddess Saraswati in some eastern states of India and Nepal. Goddess Saraswati is the Hindu deity of music, art, knowledge and wisdom, and people ask for the goddess to enlighten them and make them better human beings.
