São Tomé Day is a public holiday in São Tomé and Príncipe, and it is observed on December 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Portuguese navigators first arrived on the island of São Tomé.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in the Gulf of Guinea, and it consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. The islands were not inhabited before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century.
Although the exact arrival dates vary depending on different sources, many agreed that the Portuguese arrived on the island of São Tomé on December 21, 1471, and on the island of Príncipe on January 17, 1472. The Portuguese established the first settlement on the islands 20 years after, in 1493.
