Revolution Day is a public holiday in the Gambia, and it is observed on July 22 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the 1994 coup led by Yahya Jammeh on this day in 1994 against Sir Dawda Jawara's government.
The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is a country in West Africa. The Portuguese first reached the area in the mid-15th century. The British Empire occupied the Gambia following the Capture of Senegal in 1758 and made the Gambia a separate colony in 1888.
On February 18, 1965, the Gambia gained its independence as a constitutional monarchy with Elizabeth II as Queen of the Gambia. In 1970, following a referendum, the Gambia became a republic and Sir Dawda Jawara became the first president.
On July 22, 1994, four junior Army officers led by Yahya Jammeh staged a coup and took the power. The coup overthrew the government of Sir Dawda Jawara. In the 1996 presidential election, Yahya Jammeh won the election, and he was re-elected as president in 2001, 2006 and 2011.
