National Heroes' Day is a public holiday in the Bahamas, and it is observed on the second Monday in October each year. The holiday is in honor of the national heroes of the Bahamas who made significant contributions to the nation.
The Bahamas is a sovereign country in the Atlantic, east of the Florida Keys. People inhabited the islands for centuries before Christopher Columbus first arrived in 1492. To celebrate the arrival of Columbus, the Bahamas has been celebrating Columbus Day or Discovery Day until 2013.
In recent years, many countries began to celebrate the indigenous culture instead of Columbus' arrival. In 2013, the Bahamas replaced Discovery Day with National Heroes' Day, a holiday dedicated to those individuals who have made significant contributions to the country in the areas such as politicians, educators, sports, freedom fighters, and many other areas.
During the holiday, the Prime Minister will have a speech at a special ceremony for the national heroes. Many other festive events are also celebrated across the country.
