National Heritage Day is a public holiday celebrated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and it is observed on the second Monday in October each year. The holiday was Columbus Day commemorating when Christopher Columbus first sighted the islands on his first voyage in 1492.
Columbus Day was renamed National Heritage Day in 2014, celebrating the islands' rich historical and cultural heritage.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory comprising the larger Caicos Islands, the smaller Turks Islands, and many cays and islets. Indigenous people inhabited the island for hundreds of years before Europeans came to the islands. Europeans settled on the islands in the middle of the 17th century, and it became a British colony in 1783.
