National Foundation Day is a public holiday in Japan, and it is observed on February 11 each year.
National Foundation Day recognizes the ascension of the First Emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu, whose accession is traditionally dated as 660 BC. Originally, the day was celebrated as New Year's day in the traditional lunisolar calendar. In the Meiji Period, the country switched from the Chinese lunisolar calendar to the Gregorian calendar, and National Foundation Day jumped to February 11 accordingly.
