Independence Day (Mauritania)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Mauritania, observed on November 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Mauritania's independence from France on November 28, 1960.

Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in Northwest Africa. People inhabited the territory for centuries under different rules. In the mid-15th century, Europeans started to contact Mauritania. In the 1850s, the French expanded onto the mainland and built a French colony in West Africa.

After World War II, similar to the other countries in West Africa, a series of reforms took place in Mauritania. France agreed on the full independence of Mauritania in July 1960, and on November 28, 1960, Mauritania declared its independence.
