Independence Day is a public holiday in Colombia, and it is observed on July 20 each year.
Independence Day commemorates the riot on July 20, 1810 in Bogota, when people went on the street against Spanish rule, and the establishment of a Junta with limited independence. The movement eventually led to freeing Colombia from the Spanish and the creation of the Republic of Colombia.
It was said that the riot started when the Spanish merchant Joaquín Gonzalez Llorente refused to lend a flower vase with a haughty attitude, which raised tempers of the people against the Spanish.
