Independence Day (Burundi)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Burundi, and it is observed on July 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Burundi's complete independence from Belgium on July 1, 1962.

In 1899, Burundi became part of German East Africa, which marked the start of the European colonial era. During World War I, Belgian forces invaded and took control of Burundi in 1916. Belgium renamed the area together with Rwanda as Ruanda-Urundi in 1923.

Belgian colonial rule cumulated the tensions between the Tutsi, who favored a Belgian colony with a Tutsi monarchy, and the Hutu, who did not want a Tutsi Monarchy. In 1959, Burundi's ruler requested Burundi's independence and the dissolution of the Ruanda-Urundi union.

On July 1, 1961, Burundi was separated from Ruanda-Urundi and gained independence from Belgium.
