He was selected as Franklin D. Roosevelt's running mate in 1944, and became vice president during Roosevelt's fourth term but was not deeply involved in key wartime decisions.

After the Presidency, he returned to Independence, Missouri, where he lived modestly, and wrote his memoirs and participated in the creation of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum.
