The History of Saint Nicholas of Flüe Day?

Nicholas of Flüe was born in Flüeli, in the canton of Obwalden. He lived as a soldier, farmer, judge, and family man before, at the age of 50, choosing a spiritual life of solitude. With his wife's consent, he left his family to live as a hermit in the Ranft valley, where he became a spiritual advisor to both peasants and political leaders.

He is best known for his crucial role in mediating the conflict among Swiss cantons in 1481, helping to prevent a civil war and ensuring the continued unity of the Swiss Confederation. This intervention led to the Stanser Verkommnis, a pivotal agreement in Swiss history.

He was beatified in 1669 by Pope Clement IX, canonized in 1947 by Pope Pius XII, and declared patron saint of Switzerland in 1947.

The Catholic Church commemorates his feast day on March 21, the date of his death in 1487. However, in Obwalden, his home canton, the local holiday is celebrated on September 25. This date honors the importance of Brother Klaus (as he is affectionately known) in Swiss cultural and religious life.
