The History of Revolution Day?

The Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1970, the Gambia became a republic but did not withdraw from the Commonwealth.

On July 22, 1994, a group of young Gambian soldiers, led by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh, carried out a bloodless military coup.

They overthrew President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, who had led the country since its independence in 1965. The coup ended The Gambia's status as one of Africa's longest-standing multi-party democracies. After seizing power, Jammeh established the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) and suspended the constitution.

In 1996, he won a controversial presidential election, and he was re-elected for three more terms in 2001, 2006 and 2011. The anniversary of the coup is declared as the national holiday namely Revolution Day.

In December 2016, Jammeh lost the presidential election to Adama Barrow, ending over two decades of his rule.
