The History of Republic Day?
Trinidad and Tobago was a British colony for over 150 years.
On August 31, 1962, it gained independence from Britain, becoming a sovereign nation. However, even after independence, Queen Elizabeth II remained the ceremonial head of state, represented by a Governor General.
In the years following independence, there was growing national support to sever all colonial ties, including the symbolic connection to the British Crown. A Constitutional Reform Commission was established, and a new constitution was drafted.
On September 24, 1976, the Republic Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago was proclaimed. Sir Ellis Clarke, who had served as the last Governor General, became the first President of the Republic. Trinidad and Tobago officially transitioned from a constitutional monarchy to a parliamentary republic.
