Our Lady of Victory
Our Lady of Victory is a Marian devotion that began with the Catholic Monarchs of Spain and was later solidified after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, when victory over the Ottomans was credited to Mary's intercession through the Rosary. The History of Our Lady of Victory?
The most famous Spanish shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria is in Málaga.
In 1487, during the Reconquista, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (the Catholic Monarchs) conquered Málaga from Moorish rule. They attributed their victory to the Virgin Mary, carrying with them an image of the Virgin given by Emperor Maximilian I.
After the conquest, they founded a sanctuary dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, and she was declared the patroness of Málaga.
The local feast of Nuestra Señora de la Victoria is celebrated on September 8 in Málaga. This date coincides with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, making it a Marian festival of both local and universal meaning.
In Spain more broadly, the title "Our Lady of Victory" was also remembered after the Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571). That date was first called the Feast of Our Lady of Victory and later changed by Pope Gregory XIII to Our Lady of the Rosary.
