The History of Our Lady of Africa?
The devotion began in the early 15th century after the Portuguese conquest of Ceuta in 1415.
In 1421, King John I of Portugal established the parish of Santa María de África. This marked the introduction of Marian devotion under this title in Ceuta, a city located on the North African coast but long connected with Iberian Christian tradition.
The image of Our Lady of Africa, a Gothic-style wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus, became the spiritual heart of this devotion.
In 1580, when Portugal was united with Spain under Philip II, devotion to the Virgin in Ceuta gained wider Spanish influence.
By the 17th century, Our Lady of Africa was fully integrated into Spanish religious life and recognized as the Patroness of Ceuta.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Africa (Santuario de Nuestra Señora de África) was expanded and became a pilgrimage site.
Her feast is celebrated on August 5, with processions through the streets of Ceuta, religious ceremonies and cultural festivities. She is especially venerated as a protector of sailors and soldiers, given Ceuta's role as a fortress and port city.
