The History of Ochi Day?

On the night of October 28, 1940, the Italian ambassador to Greece delivered an ultimatum from dictator Benito Mussolini to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas. The demand required Greece to allow Axis forces to enter and occupy strategic locations in the country.

According to historical accounts, Metaxas responded in French with the words "Then it is war!". For the Greek people, this became symbolized by the single word "Ochi", meaning "No".

Within hours of Metaxas's refusal, Italian forces invaded Greece through Albania. This marked the beginning of the Greco-Italian War. Despite being outnumbered and under-equipped, the Greeks mounted a strong defense and pushed the Italian forces back into Albania.

Greece's resistance became one of the first successful Allied defenses against Axis forces during World War II, gaining admiration worldwide.

The word "Ochi" became a rallying cry, representing courage, independence, and national pride. It symbolized Greece's determination to defend its sovereignty, even against great odds.

Ochi Day was officially established as a national holiday after World War II. Ochi Day is not just about WWII history but about Greek values of freedom, dignity and resistance. It stands as a reminder of the importance of unity and courage in defending independence.
