The History of National Day?

Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements under British colonial rule until World War II.

After the Japanese Occupation (1942–1945), Singapore returned to British control but grew restless for self-governance. In 1959, Singapore became a self-governing state, with Lee Kuan Yew as its first Prime Minister.

In 1963, Singapore merged with Malaysia, hoping to gain economic and political stability. However, tensions quickly arose over political ideologies, racial policies, and economic disagreements.

On August 9, 1965, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and declared an independent republic.

The separation was a profound moment: Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's tearful announcement on television captured the uncertainty and emotional weight of independence.

Singapore's first National Day was celebrated on August 9, 1966, marking the first anniversary of independence.

Today, National Day is not only about independence but also about reflecting on Singapore's journey from a small island nation to a global hub.
