The History of Memorial Birthday?
After the Korean War (1950–1953), South Korea sought to formally honor the soldiers who died defending the nation. In 1956, the government officially designated June 6 as Memorial Day (현충일).
The date was chosen because June is a symbolic month for national defense, coinciding with the start of summer military campaigns in Korean history.
Initially, the day focused on remembering the fallen soldiers of the Korean War during 1950s–1960s.
Over time, Memorial Day grew to honor soldiers who died in all conflicts for South Korea's security, independence activists who resisted Japanese colonial rule (1910–1945), and citizens who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Today, it commemorates all patriots and martyrs who gave their lives for freedom and security.
Memorial Day is not only a day of mourning but also one of reflection and unity, reminding South Koreans of the sacrifices made for democracy, freedom and peace.
