The History of Labour Day?
Globally, Labour Day originated from the labor movement in the late 19th century, especially the Haymarket Affair in Chicago (1886) where workers campaigned for an eight-hour workday.
By the early 20th century, May 1st became an international day of solidarity for workers, recognized in many countries, especially those with communist, or labor-oriented political movements.
Before 1990, Yemen was divided into two countries: North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic) and South Yemen (People's Democratic Republic of Yemen), which had a Marxist government.
– South Yemen (socialist-oriented) officially recognized and celebrated Labour Day before unification, holding state-supported rallies and public celebrations focused on worker solidarity and labor rights.
– In North Yemen, Labour Day was observed less formally, though workers' rights movements and unions still existed, influenced by broader Arab nationalist and labor movements in the region.
In 1990, After Yemen's unification, Labour Day (May 1) became a national public holiday recognized across the whole country, emphasizing workers' contributions to the nation's economy and development.
In 2014, the outbreak of the Yemeni Civil War, Labour Day activities have been reduced or symbolic in many regions since then.
