The History of Labour Day?
The idea of Labour Day (also known as International Workers' Day) originated from the late 19th-century labor movement, particularly the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers protested for the eight-hour workday.
In 1889, the International Socialist Congress declared May 1 as International Workers' Day.
The first May Day celebration in Ukrainian territory took place in Lviv in 1890, organized by socialist activists during the Austro-Hungarian period.
By the early 20th century, labor activists across different regions of Ukraine held demonstrations demanding better working conditions.
After Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union, May 1st was declared the "Day of International Solidarity of Workers", and it was one of the most important state holidays.
After gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine continued to observe May 1st as a public holiday, initially retaining much of the Soviet symbolism.
Over time, the day's tone shifted away from communist ideology and became more of a general day off, with people enjoying outdoor activities, family time, and spring traditions.
