The History of Labour Day?
The roots of Labour Day trace back to the late 19th-century labor movement, particularly the Haymarket Affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday.
By the early 20th century, May 1st became widely recognized across many nations as a day to celebrate labor rights and demand better working conditions.
Tunisia's own labor history is deeply tied to the founding of the UGTT (Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail), which was established in 1946 by Farhat Hached, a key figure in the national independence movement.
The UGTT was not only a trade union but also a political force pushing for national sovereignty, worker protections, and social reform. The UGTT joined forces with the Neo Destour Party, led by Habib Bourguiba, to fight for Tunisia's independence from France.
After Tunisia gained independence in March 1956, the labor movement retained strong influence in shaping social and economic policy. May 1 was officially declared a national public holiday by the Tunisian state.
