The History of Labour Day?
The roots of Labour Day go back to the Haymarket affair in Chicago, USA (1886), where workers protesting for an 8-hour workday were met with violence.
In 1889, the Second International declared May 1st as International Workers' Day, encouraging worldwide demonstrations for workers' rights.
Under French colonial rule, Togo began observing May 1 Labour Day, mirroring France's practices. However, during colonial times, workers had limited rights, and the observance was more symbolic than empowering.
After gaining independence in 1960, Togo officially continued Labour Day as a public holiday, granting it national importance.
From the 1970s to the 1990s, Togo's trade unions became increasingly active. During political unrest in the 1990s, Labour Day also became a platform for broader calls for democracy and human rights.
