The History of Labour Day?
Labour Day has its roots in the Haymarket affair in Chicago, 1886, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday.
Over time, May 1st became a day of international solidarity for laborers, especially in socialist and post-colonial countries, including many in the Arab world.
Under the French Mandate (1920–1946), labor activism existed but was heavily suppressed.
After independence in 1946, Syrian trade unions began to organize more openly and push for better conditions.
The Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party seized power in 1963, ushering in a new era that emphasized workers' rights, state ownership of key industries and expansion of the public sector.
Labour Day became a formal state holiday celebrated widely in both official and popular culture.
In the 2000s and especially after the outbreak of civil war in 2011, economic hardship and displacement deeply affected Syria's labor force. Labour Day continues to be observed, but often as a symbolic recognition of workers' resilience amid ongoing challenges.
