The History of Labour Day?

Labour Day traces back to the late 19th century labour movement in the United States. In 1886, the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers striking for an 8-hour workday faced violent repression, became the catalyst.

Since then, May 1 has been celebrated in much of the world as International Workers' Day, honoring workers' rights and solidarity.

When South Sudan was still part of Sudan, May 1 was already marked as Labour Day, recognized by trade unions and workers' organizations. Workers in both North and South Sudan used the day to push for better working conditions, higher wages and recognition of unions.

Following its independence on July 9, 2011, South Sudan adopted May 1 as an official public holiday.

It became a day to celebrate the role of workers in the nation-building process, particularly significant for a country emerging from decades of conflict.
