The History of Labour Day?

Labour Day, or International Workers' Day, is rooted in the late 19th-century labor movement, particularly the struggle for the eight-hour workday.

The turning point was the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886), when workers striking for better conditions faced violence. Since then, May 1 has been observed worldwide as a day of workers' solidarity and rights.

Before independence, the territory of present-day Slovakia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Slovak workers began observing May 1 with demonstrations and rallies demanding better working conditions and social rights.

After the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918, May 1 became a recognized day of workers' solidarity.

During the socialist period (1948–1989), Labour Day was elevated to one of the most important state holidays.

Following the fall of communism, Labour Day was redefined, shedding much of its socialist political weight but retaining its significance as a public holiday.

It also took on an additional meaning: May 1 commemorates the establishment of the Slovak National Council in 1918, which asserted Slovak self-determination within Czechoslovakia.

After Slovakia became an independent state in 1993, May 1 remained a national holiday.
