The History of Labour Day?
Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day, has its origins in the 19th-century international labor movement.
The most significant event was the Haymarket affair in Chicago (1886), when workers campaigning for an eight-hour workday faced violent repression. Following this, May 1 was adopted worldwide as a day to honor workers' struggles, rights, and solidarity.
Seychelles, like many former colonies, inherited workers' struggles from its history of slavery, indentured labor, and colonial rule.
As the labor movement gained ground in Africa and around the world during the 20th century, Seychelles also began to recognize the importance of workers' rights and protections.
After independence from Britain in 1976, May 1 was formally adopted as Labour Day, in line with international observance.
The celebration became a way to acknowledge the role of workers in the nation's economy. It also symbolizes the government's commitment to improving employment conditions, fair wages, and social protections.
