The History of Labour Day?

Labour Day, or May Day, is rooted in the international workers' movement of the late 19th century. It was first established to commemorate the Haymarket affair of May 1886 in Chicago, where workers striking for an 8-hour workday faced violent suppression. The event inspired worldwide recognition of May 1 as a day for workers' rights and social justice.

The first official Labour Day demonstration in Greece took place in 1893, organized by about 2,000 workers in Athens. They demanded reduced working hours, Sunday as a day of rest, and improved working conditions. In 1894, another mass rally reinforced these demands, though the movement faced strong opposition from employers and the state.

Labour Day became increasingly important through the 20th century, tied to the fight for fair wages, union rights, and better working conditions.

During times of political repression, especially under dictatorships, Labour Day celebrations were often restricted or banned. Despite this, workers continued to honor the day, sometimes illegally, as a symbol of resistance and solidarity.

After the restoration of democracy in 1974, Labour Day became an official public holiday in Greece. It is marked not only as a celebration of workers' achievements but also as a day of protest, with trade unions, leftist groups and civil organizations staging marches and rallies.
