The History of Labour Day?

Labour Day in Uruguay has a long and significant history rooted in both international and national labor movements.

Labour Day began internationally following the 1886 Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday. This event inspired labor movements worldwide.

Uruguay was one of the first Latin American countries to observe Labour Day. The first Labour Day celebration in Uruguay took place on May 1, 1890, in Montevideo, organized by workers' associations and trade unions inspired by European labor movements.

Uruguay officially declared May 1st a national public holiday, making it one of the earliest countries in the Americas to formally recognize Labour Day at the government level.

The day became a time for workers to gather publicly, march, and demand better labor conditions, including shorter working hours, fair wages and improved workplace safety.
