The History of King's Day?

The holiday began in the Netherlands in 1885, originally called Princess's Day, in honor of Princess Wilhelmina's 5th birthday (August 31).

It became Queen's Day when Wilhelmina became queen in 1890, and the tradition carried on with her successors, Queen Juliana (April 30) and Queen Beatrix (who kept it on April 30 even though her birthday was in January).

In 2013, when Queen Beatrix abdicated and her son Willem-Alexander became king, the holiday shifted to April 27, his birthday, and was renamed King's Day.

As a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sint Maarten also observes the monarch's official birthday.

Thus, since 2014, King's Birthday has been celebrated annually on April 27 in Sint Maarten, in line with the Netherlands.
