The History of Labour Day?
The celebration of International Workers' Day originated in the late 19th century, following the Haymarket Affair in Chicago (1886) where workers campaigned for the eight-hour workday.
By the early 20th century, May 1st became widely recognized as International Labour Day by labor movements, socialist groups, and governments worldwide.
During colonial rule in Rhodesia (pre-independence Zimbabwe), African workers endured poor working conditions, low wages, and limited labor rights.
Trade union movements began to grow in the 1940s and 1950s, with African workers organizing strikes and protests against unfair labor practices.
After achieving independence from British colonial rule in 1980, the new Zimbabwean government formally adopted May 1st as a national public holiday.
